Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign

April 10-14, 2012

Gary Eclebarger and Scott Patchan from New Market, Virginia

Stonewall Jackson, 1862

Stonewall Jackson, 1862

It was a campaign that amazed the world and put the name “Stonewall” on peoples’ lips from the palaces in Europe to the White House.  Jackson’s small and mobile Valley army, aided by the dependable but peculiar Richard Stoddard Ewell, confounded several uncoordinated Federal forces and disrupted the plans of General George McClellan in front of Richmond.  Conceptualized by Robert E. Lee as a distraction; but, implemented by Jackson—the 1862 Valley campaign terrified the Lincoln administration who froze forces intended for Richmond in place giving Lee the opening he needed to execute the Seven Days Campaign.  Patchan and Echelbarger are the campaign’s two most learned scholars—entertaining and scholarly this team will cover this campaign from top to bottom.  Four full days plus an evening.  Limited to first 20 to register.
