A Weekend Warrior Program
With Norm Dasinger Jr. from Birmingham, AL
Sep 8-10, 2016
Friday, Sept 8th
Meet at our headquarters hotel at 7 PM where we will meet our tour leader, Norm Dasinger. He will make an opening presentation entitled: Wilson’s Raid – 13,000 Cavalry Smash into Alabama, Defeat Forrest and Capture Jefferson Davis. It will be an overview of the planning, organization and successful execution of the American army’s greatest mounted invasions.
Saturday, Sept 9th
Starting at 8:30 AM, we will pick up Wilson’s route in modern day Birmingham–a much larger metropolis than in 1865. The general and his staff were headquartered at the Arlington Mansion – which still stands today. We will then follow the Yankee cavalry leader south toward Selma, stopping at the site of the battle of Ebenezer Church where Wilson defeated Forrest and where Forrest has his last personal kill of the war. We will tour Selma. A once historically proud antebellum town that has slowly lost most of its luster due to neglect. We will visit a portion of the trenches that saw action at the battle of Selma. We will see homes associated with Abraham Lincoln, the Monitor vs Merrimack and General William J Hardee. We will also visit Live Oak Cemetery, one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the South. Finally we will explore the site of the Selma Arsenal and Navy shipyard-the largest such facility in the South, outside of Richmond, VA. We will return to the hotel by 6 PM.
Sunday, Sept 10th
Lets start at 8 AM as we drive to Montgomery. Our discussions will begin there. We will see where the CSA was formed, where Davis was sworn in as President, the location of the first governmental buildings and the first White House of the Confederacy. We will pass by Fire Eater, William L Yancey’s home and see the graves of Varina Howell Davis’s father, William C Oates (of the 15th Alabama and Little Round Top fame) and of course the timeless Hank Williams, Sr. As a special treat we will trace the route of Jefferson Davis into Montgomery upon his selection as President and see some other sites associated with Civil War Montgomery. Finally we will follow Wilson out of town as he rides toward Columbus, Georgia and a rendezvous that will lead to the capture of Jefferson Davis. We will finish and return to the hotel by 4 PM.
