The British Expeditionary Force in France

BGES’ World War II Series

The British Expeditionary Force in France: Dunkirk, 70th Anniversary Tour

With the Germans’ entry into Poland on September 1, 1939, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany.  This principled stand was based more on the determination to draw a line in the sand before Adolph Hitler’s demands than a realistic expectation that the two countries could arm and prepare to defend against the German juggernaut.

Soon Hitler turned his attention to the new enemies and in an awesome display of their military might swept through Belgium and into France crushing any resistance in their paths.  A British Expeditionary Force found itself practically helpless and without French support and by May 1940 found itself being forced back to the coast.

A determination was made to withdraw the British forces to England; but how?  Surely the Germans would not cooperate.  What occurred was one of the war’s most miraculous stories and one that cannot and should not ever be forgotten and we won’t.  In partnership with our friends at Old Country Tours—whose principal is a long standing member of the BGES, we are proud to extend our offerings to World War II and at prices that will make you smile.

Rather than make two and three week composite tours, BGES will begin to offer shorter consumer friendly campaign studies similar to those we offer in the United States.  This is the first of that genre.  If you have a little extra time, you may want to add our D-Day program.  Click here for more detailed information and a registration form.
