| The Central Plains Indian Wars |
|
In the wake of the American Civil War, the country continued to "Go West." Ambitious and hopeful settlers demanded the government protect them and remove Native American Indians from their path. The Indians, having been continually and without consideration forced to leave their ancestral homes, pushed back in savage and important ways. Heroes of the late Civil War who remained in the army found their wartime ranks reduced—Major Generals became lieutenant colonels, majors and captains. Despite the reductions in grade these men were professional soldiers who had to relearn a new way of fighting. The problem spanned the country from north to south along the frontier. BGES is proud to continue with its successful series of tours which have included Apache Country, the Northern Sioux and the Southern Plains Indians. This program focuses on the Central Plains Indian Wars. Led by Neil Mangum, one of the nation’s most respected Native American authorities, we will have access to private property available only to Mangum and members of the BGES. Neil has made his reputation by comprehensive scholarship and sterling stewardship. He recently retired from the National Park Service where he was regional historian for the Southwestern United States. Neil served as the Superintendent of the Little Big Horn National Battlefield during a period of great change and is the published expert on the battle of the Rosebud. You will be entertained and amused; but most of all you will be educated. Click here for for detailed program and registration information. |
