Fields of Honor details

Ed Bearss has been a frequent BGES seminar faculty member and we have videotaped him every step of the way. Fields of Honor: Pivotal Battles of the Civil War was a joint effort between him, BGES and the National Geographic Society to put down in his words the stories of pivotal Civil War battles, based on those videotapes of him on the actual battlefields. BGES members dedicated many hours of their time to transcribe the tapes and Ed then made revisions to shorten the chapters into cogent stores, which he did in a masterly fashion. The book is representative of him and yet merely scratches the surface of material still there. As a stand alone work, it will not disappoint you.

Ed says in this book that BGES did things with him that he had never done with tour groups - that is high praise and indeed accurate. For the many groups that are out there, none have shown a commitment to tell the entire story of battles as we do. These are quality programs and people who read this book will see the quality and unique presence that Ed is.

Fields of Honor and The Blue and Gray Education Society

We have just published a second book along these same lines with National Geographic Society. Titled Receding Tide: Vicksburg, Gettysburg and the Day that Changed the Civil War, it tells the story of Vicksburg and Gettysburg, the complex relationship between Lee and Grant, and the two battles that would test the Confederacy and prove that the Union would ultimately prevail.

Both books available for purchase on the BGES Home page.
