This 2002 project was dedicated on September 11th and features 17 signs developed and paid for by the members of the BGES. The idea originated with BGES member Herb Miller and was completed on time and budget. The project was cosponsored by the state of Maryland with Ranger Al Preston representing the state. This project suffered from adverse publicity generated by the popular cult film The Blair Witch project which caused members of the town of Burkittsville to reject historically accurate sign placement. Thirteen of the signs are placed in an around Crampton’s Gap and Gathland State Park.
Although our largest project it lacks the placement logic needed to make the interpretation meaningful. Double panel signs were also placed at Turner’s and Fox’s Gaps. Future interpretative efforts there will emphasize proper placement of signage prior to the execution of a memorandum of understanding. Still the Michael Beard designed signs are impressive in quality and durability earning kudos from all who see and read them.
Fourteen of the signs are shown here. To see a larger version of any one, click on the thumbnail image.
